airships will still fly, using less energy.  Slower, yes.  But we really don't need to hurry everything as much as we do currently, anyway.

For that matter, there are also high-speed trains.  It took me eight or nine hours to fly across the US recently (direct flight), because of the delays and time consuming factors of loading and unloading, take-off, etc.  Taking 14-18 in more comfort wouldn't be that big an inconvenience.

    •  high speed trains = BOONDOGGLE (0+ / 0-)

Hate to break it to you, but high speed trains are as big a distraction as any other boondoggle. We can have medium speed trains - up to 110 mph, on existing track, but high speed requires a complete rebuild and that we are not going to do.

Spare me the chatter regarding competition with airlines - a whole bunch of them are going bankrupt very shortly and then we'll have steady attrition thereafter due to fuel costs. We do not have a $DEITY given right to flit about on the ground at a mile a minute or in the air at eight times that speed.

      •  Why not? if we're going to socialize... (0+ / 0-)

and if the economy is that bad, then maybe a New New Deal will have some public works projects that make it plausible.

What exactly are you advocating if you don't like what's been presented? Do you want us to go back to horse-and-buggy?

High speed rail means something very specific - digging up stuff that already works to put in something really fast. It won't get done nationally without $GOBS of money and a hammer of god style approach to eminent domain.

Medium speed (110mph) rail is a plan that is already vetted via a Threshold 21 model produced by the Millennium Institute.

for specific high-traffic routes, not a huge re-railing of the entire country... I can see how that would be a non-starter.

    •  I'd like to see more airships... (0+ / 0-)

but they might cramp everyone in those too, so it might be just as miserable but for an even slower and longer trip. Unless they can make them go faster. Then there is the ground-handling issues of a huge cross-section in wind too.
