    Whether or not technocrats in the middle decide a bailout is "necessary," it's the kind of measure that is going to be reviled by both right and left for different reasons.  

    It's ideologically offensive, in no small part because it's not based on ideology.

    I agree that we shouldn't set ourselves up and allow the GOP to portray "Bush and the Democratic Congress" as perpetrators of a giant bailout for Wall Street elites with taxpayer money (cue faux/real outrage).

    However, I'm not really sure how to do that without fully opposing the bill.  In the end, we will get the "concessions" you're referring to.  Indeed, we may end up with the best possible program, even one that is likely to turn a profit in a few years.

    No matter -- the GOP will proceed to hang us with it anyway, and we'll be left trying to explain why it was really a good deal.

    Wrong position to be in, politically.
