I was less than 10 years from retirement when that happened to my retirement account (intel was not the only stock I held, but I got out of them all anyway).  I was talking to my rather well off mother-in-law on the weekend and she told me that none of her money is in the stock market; she always kept it in savings accounts with regular banks since she was young and once was in and out of the stock market for the same reason -- no reliable growth.  About half the people I ask do not have stock marktet investments.  Bank savings accounts are far more popular than I had been led to believe, even among people with a stash of money.
