  •  I was told this week (6+ / 0-)

by someone who used to run GOTV in NC that Obama needs closer to a 10-point margin there to overcome the rampant cheating and vote suppression tactics.

    •  I seriously doubt this. (9+ / 0-)

I don't remember any whiffs of campaign/voting problems in NC in years. I think he may need a bigger to lead to overcome the conservative whites that may come out of the woodwork.
I honestly think you will be surprised at the results in rural areas of NC. Especially in the western part of the state. Rural people see nothing about McCain that shows any understanding of rural issues.
I live in Raleigh but my wife works for a large Rural development agency in the state and she keeps me informed on issues. People in Asheville are having to stay in line for 2-3 hours to get gas. Fights are breaking out because of line breaking or stations closing just as you get close to the pumps.
I don't know about a credit tightening but Ike has caused major disruption in the gas market in the Southeast but the Asheville has been very serious in the last few days. Can you imagine waking up and getting your kids ready for school and getting a call that schools have closed for the day because the buses have no gas. This has been a very under-reported issue.

      •  good to hear (0+ / 0-)

Her stories were from Helms v. Gantt days, with mill workers being told with no notice that they'd have to work a 14-hour day on election day, African Americans receiving postcards telling them they might be committing a felony if they voted, etc.

        Thanks.

    •  Dem GOV, Dem SOS, great board of elections (6+ / 0-)

No excuse early voting, same day registration/early voting.  I think that NC will be pretty clean.  Only recent problems have been in counties with touch screen voting machines, most counties use the bubble scanners.

I think your fears are unfounded.

    •  There could be some truth to that... (1+ / 0-)

I voted on a Diebold machine in 2004 and there is now no record for my vote at the NC State Board of Elections, while all the other times I've voted (which were on paper ballots) there are records that I voted.  They were having problems with the machines where I voted at in 2004, so it could have just been an accident but it does make me more inclined to believe that the 2000 and 2004 elections were stolen.

If the machine barfed up your vote, it probably means the registration system assumes you didn't vote and your registration will be purged if it is seen as more than four years old.
