But unfortunately for McCain, it was also Obama's best and Obama's best was a great deal calmer and more measured, while McCain seemed tense, angry and condescending to Obama.  In short, McCain is no diplomat.

When it came to substance McCain tried to use the names of lots of foreign leaders to show how experienced he is.  Except:

    1.  He stumbled and stuttered over the name of the Iranian President
    1.  He mispronounced the name of the newly-elected Pakistani leader
    1.  Although he has traveled widely, it is not clear he learned much
    1.  McCain loves nuclear power, as long as waste is not transported in Arizona
    1.  McCain wants to look forward, when it suits him, tout history when it helps him
    1.  In the end he offered no new ideas, just old complaints and rancor

So while it was good, it just wasn't good enough.  That Obama did not reach for knee-jerk disagreement, being willing to acknowledge McCain had it about right a number of times, won points for style.  McCain is too much of an angry man to be that generous.  One gets the impression a McCain Presidency would lurch between old jokes, fights, name-calling and stories about what Ronald Reagan told him one afternoon.  Been there, done that, sick to death of it.  I think it is time for McCain to retire and write his (angry) memoirs.

to Jim Lehrer for making this debate format shine.  I have at times found Lehrer too obstinate in debates.  Last night, he was great.

As McCain says, "Get off my lawns!"
