  •  It wasn't the surge, it was the bribary. (5+ / 0-)

The Kurds, Sunnis and Shia still love each other, they never forget to send each other flowers and candy.

Dammit I wish that I wouldn't channel Von Rumsfeldt halfway through a comment.

was lead to a temporary cessation of (major) violence. Which is great but not a victory. McCain knows that which is why as far as I can tell, his plan is to have the troops stay indefinitely and hope that the sunnis and shias do decide to reconcile their centuries old conflict in the next couple years.

We should have started the process of getting out (well we never should have gone in) 16 months ago.

      •  Nearly every occupation in history (5+ / 0-)

        Has been resisted cyclically.

The longer it goes on the more chance it will degenerate again.

        Its time to leave.

      •  I'd love to see Senator Obama quip (4+ / 0-)

I'd love to see Senator Obama deliver a line to McCain if he brings up the "surge" in the final debate. If he used the right tone, which would be more along the lines of acknowledging an interruption from McCain about the surge while Senator Obama was making a point, it would be devastating.

Obama answering question about Iraq and how it relates to economic security.

McCain interrupts with standard line about, "When are you going to admit the surge .... blah blah blah."

Obama pauses while making his point, "I know you want to talk about the surge again, John. Hold on for just a minute while I finish making my point and we can cover that ground again." Finishes and then says, "Okay, now I think you wanted to talk about the surge, right? You do realize that ended a year ago, don't you? I'm glad to go over it again with you but I think the American people are probably more interested in hearing about our plans moving forward. I just presented mine. I don't even know if you have one."

McCain would probably sh*t himself and raise his voice, "You just won't do it! Why won't you do it?"

"Senator McCain, why won't you talk about what you're going to do next in Iraq instead of giving history lessons?"

    •  A dear friend of mine who is deployed in Iraq (12+ / 0-)

says that we're basically paying the opposing militias about $300 per person per month to play nice. The U.S. military, in my view, has done extraordinarily well, but the money factor cannot be overlooked.

      •  may your friend return safe and sound. (5+ / 0-)

I am sorry they are there, better they are home asap.

This spring when he let them off their leashes, violence ticked back up, until he told them to stand down.

Not to mention all the neighborhoods in Baghdad have been partishioned off with concrete barriers, and millions of sunnis and shias displaced, because they have been kicked out of their homes, because they were the wrong sect for how their neighborhood turned out.

That is one of the biggies to deal with when leaving. All the people that want their property back and the fighting that will ensue over that.
