that Gore had Lieberman on the ticket, it's possible that Bush was actually the lesser of the evils.

Who had something on Gore to make him take Lieberman?

    •  I imagine Gore was just trying to balance (11+ / 0-)

his well-known liberality with a more conservative running mate.  Don't forget, this was pre-9/11 and Lieberman hadn't come out of the closet as a raving, war-mongering maniac yet.

I suspect Gore would have figured him out pretty quickly and stuffed him in a deeper closet.

And the only evil Bush was lesser than was Cheney.

it was purely an electoral map decision.  Funny how that one worked out, huh?

Secondarily, the Liberman pick allowed him to distance himself from the Clinton sex scandals.

"Gore picked Liberman in order to win FL it was purely an electoral map decision."

        Likely so.

"Funny how that one worked out, huh?"

Gore did win FL, and I estimate that Lieberman probably pulled in some 30K votes or so that may have gone to Bush otherwise. Given that the margin separating Gore and Bush was a few hundred votes, the strategy can be argued to have worked.

Howver, Lieberman screwed Gore over during the recounts when he defied campaign's directive and sided with Bush on counting overseas ballots with no postmarks or signatures.

"Secondarily, the Liberman pick allowed him to distance himself from the Clinton sex scandals."

This was media's spin, but it is likely not correct, IMO. Gore has never said (AFAIK) that this was the reason for his choice (the only public reason to my knowledge he gave for his VP choice came in his 2007 congr. testimony on global warming where he said that JL's strong record on the environment and global warming was a (or the) reason for his choice). Also, Gore nicely praised Clinton's accomplishments at the convention and neither he nor JL ever chastised Clinton at the convention or on the campaign trail. So, we should probably put this media concocted myth to rest.
