...I don't think J-Mac is credited with any air to air kills.  His job was to bomb villages

    •  He bombed two MiGs parked on an airstrip (9+ / 0-)

it's mentioned in the Rolling Stone article.

his count is correct. 2 enemy planes, 3 american ones.

    •  Which is what makes this whole Bill Ayers thing (6+ / 0-)

so ridiculous.  I'm not in favor of bombing the Pentagon or the Capitol, but let's look at this in perspective.

John McCain and Bill Ayers were caught up in a tragic, terrible war. Bill Ayers bombed buildings and endangered civilians. John McCain bombed people - and killed men, women and children. Bill Ayers wanted to change US policy toward Vietnam.  John McCain wanted to change North Vietnamese policy.  Both used violence. Ayers used violence against the US government, but tried not to kill anyone.  John McCain used violence against non-US civilians, with the intent to kill.  Neither one of them should be all that proud about their history.

Two men, two lives, two directions.

My brother was in Vietnam, he didn't kill anyone directly but he was maintaining bombers.

When he got home, he had friends who broke down and cried talking about the people they killed on the ground. One incident, in the afternoon, a squad saw movement in the elephant grass and opened fire. It was some children on their way home. No way anyone can get over this. This war lives on in memory.

But bombing is more remote, the pilots don't get to see the carnage up close.
