  •  My dad was a pilot, and I grew up on bases...they (11+ / 0-)

ground you ass if you screw up, or go 'hot dogging' even once.  I pointed this out to a Kossack a few months ago when I was on a serious rant about how the media refused to talk about the 5 count them, 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5...plane crashes.  The Kossack (can't remember his name) told me that pilots were allowed to resume flying and that it was not a big deal and that he had been in the Navy.  I obviously was in the midst of a 'troll attack'...I told him, that obviously 'things' were done very differently in the Navy than in the Air Force (my dad was a Byrd Col.) because in the Air Force, you don't get second and third and forth chances....I should have known that I was being trolled.  Now I've got to go take a shower and get the bad joo joo vibes out of my brain. BTW the term 'hot dogging' is when you just get up in the plane in screw around and fly any old way you want to to have a little fun and show off....you know, the way McCain, obviously flew.

This is an injustice so grave and extreme that it defies words is taking place; that the greatest beneficiaries are those who are most culpable. Glen Greenwald

Fifth from last in a class of 860 at Naval Academy.  He should have been swabbing toilets or peeling potatoes in the kitchen, not allowed to check the air in the tires of a plane, never mind pilot them.

Consider this story of a man who died on the Russian front in WWII and was my future Mother-in-law's brother. Yes, he was in the Luftwaffe. And being a bit high-spirited, couldn't resist hot dogging and he buzzed the control tower of his airfield... He was Court-martialled for disobeying orders and imprisoned and only let out to be sent to the Russian front late in the war never to return.

No family connections to keep his wings let alone stay out of jail. Maybe they were harsh back then in that outfit but better one strike you are out or at least grounded when messing up the responsibility for an expensive aircraft not to mention training that maybe would have been better given to a more deserving candidate.

Johnny McC... without connections he would have had his wings clipped (assuming he got flight certified at all in the first place... he would never have gotten that far let alone through Annapolis without family string pulling.) and just been desk-bound somewhere and would probably never have been "sent to the Russian front" so to speak, that is, would have avoided the whole POW thing not to mention being under fire at all. And we would not have to put up with him now.

So here's to my would-have-been, wife's-uncle "Nazi", Luftwaffe pilot, ... who was from what I hear was a really nice guy with a great sense of humor...

better you had been given another chance back then grounded & not in jail over there, than "Maverick" McCain 20 years later over here failing upwards till a further 40 years later has us facing him getting the ultimate promotion.

This is another attempt to post a picture of the hotdogging Luftwaffe pilot from 1943... (Future in-law uncle who did not come back from the Russian front... maybe a POW?)

In a somewhat fairer world he and John McC might have been grounded and flown a desk for the rest of their respective careers...better for all concerned...
