  •  As you say, both will be scapegoated (0+ / 0-)

Instead of recognizing that today's Republican party is kaput and completely devoid of ideas, people will point the fingers and try to blame the loss on one person.  I think the establishment will win out in scapegoating Palin, since they are, will, the establishment and have more power.

I also predict that some Republicans will try to get the party to recognize the deeper flaws in the party and urge them to address these deeper issues, but I don't think that will go anywhere.  It would take an inspiring leader to help the party do that, and I seriously don't see any viable Repug leaders on the horizon who can turn it around for them anytime soon.

in this day and age, being the entrenched "gatekeepers" doesn't guarantee victory anymore.

Social conservatives have, for some time, been building a de facto network of their own, through churches and e-mail groups. (Who do you think is responsible for about 95% of these "Obama is a Muslim/antiChrist" e-mails?)

I think with conservative economic ideology in tatters, it gives the social conservatives more ammunition to just take control of the GOP entirely. And this loss can easily be blamed on McCain while Palin gets off as the "innocent bystander."
