  •  Yes. It's a fact that he supported the Contras. (0+ / 0-)

It's not a fact that he's a terrorist. That's just inflammatory when a reasoned approach would work better.

    •  bin Laden (5+ / 0-)

didn't fly into the Twin Towers, either.

Because the Contras actually recieved mainstream support in the U.S., it's probably a poor tactic to call McCain a terrorist. But the truth is he clearly aided and abetted a terrorist organization - and the tactics of the Contras were not a secret.

      •  Like you said, it had mainstream support. (1+ / 0-)

          •  It didn't have mine either (0+ / 0-)

But it did have the support of a majority of Americans.

            •  You mind if I ask how old you are and where (4+ / 0-)
you get your information that the contras had the support of a majority of Americans?

Because I can assure you that support for the Contras was not something the majority of America supported. Most Americans who cared to know what was going on was sick and disgusted by the tactics that the contras used and knew they were wrong.

The contras were supported by some including Ollie North because they were trying to overthrow a left wing Government which many of the hard right wingers in out country thought was no good just as they think letting the liberal Democrats win here is no good.

We had no business to be involved in the over throw of the leader of any country and the results when we have been has proven it to be a mistake.

Go back and learn your history before you jump in a attack so much.

It appears you have had some kind of bug in your butt lately and it really doesn't come across so well.

I am voting for that one on Nov 4th

              •  At the time most Americans didn't know (3+ / 0-)

who or what the Contras were.  I suspect that most still don't.

The Iran/Contras atrocities were supported by our government in our name but without the knowledge of most of the citizenry.

Those who knowingly supported this were and are terrorists by any any reasonable definition of the term.

Once again the McCain camp has accused Obama of what McCain is guilty of.

People shouldn't be judged less harshly because they have more power.  That's just the opposite of the way things should be.

supported the Contras, then why did Reagan and his merry little band of (McCain-backed) fascista thugs have to be so gosh-durn covert about all their goings-on?

        •  well, it might lead to a reconsideration of... (2+ / 0-)

what the word "terrorist" means.  The contras were terrorists; the US was a state sponsor of terrorism.

I do agree with you, by the way, that nothing in this diary would be a sound electoral approach this year.

        •  Not much mainstream support (4+ / 0-)

Boland Amend's actually prohibited aid to contras - when was the last time Congress stopped the Admin from sending arms to someone?

Congress also ended Bush/Reagan support for death sqads in El Salvador.

Public support resulted in hearings, convictions, unlike Bush's lies to start this war
