    Relegate marriage, with all its religious trappings, to the churches.  Strip away any legal attributes.

    Pass a law that civil unions, authorized solely by the government (no giving the power to marry to religious leaders) is the only recognized union.

    Over time, that will become the new paradigm and young people will be amazed to learn that at one time unions were solely for heterosexuals and we called them by the religious term marriages.
