mathematical truths are true within the realm of mathematics which is apriori defined. That's it. The fact that real things can, to greater or lesser degree, be modeled with math, is an entirely different point.

I mean really, MajorFlaw, I thought you were an attorney and hip to such things :)

Since we establish the basic rules of the game, we're able to actually prove things to be true or false.  And the proof is either correct or incorrect, nothing in between.  This certainly isn't true in the social sciences, and the physical sciences are just models for a complex reality.

For high-schoolers, Plane Geometry is (or was) the first real "math" course, where a universe of lines and angles is defined, a few basic truths are established, and then a number of other (surprising?) things are also shown (i.e. proven) to be true.

Don't be a DON'T-DO... Be a DO-DO!

on your view/definition of Reality, or Ontology 101.

If your measure of reality is tactile/physical, then you are correct; mathematics merely proves by tautology.

If your measure of reality is, as for Platonists, mental/consciousness/information based, then it is physical reality that is uncertain due to its impermanence, evolution, and change; therefore only mental objects that don't depend on physical manifestations can be pure and permanent.

The problem in common English is that people with these opposing views of what constitutes being Real will argue about Realness/Truth without recognizing that they are using separate criteria.
