Free breakfasts at schools & free lunches at senior centers would help a lot.

I've noticed a lot more kids are eating breakfast at school these days (our elem school has a grant to give out free breakfasts). Food prices have more than doubled here & I think it's sinking a lot of people who were right there on the edge.

The county also sponsored a summer program to hand out free lunches at playgrounds this summer, so the kids would eat and get some fresh air every day.

I think these are very well thought-out programs that may make all the difference to a lot of families.

and also the Farm to Cafeteria programs support small local growers by purchasing their produce & handing it out to school kids. OrangeClouds115 has probably written something brilliant about it. It works wonderfully well here, and it would be great to see it go national.

Increasing the official "poverty line" to more realistic levels would make more people eligible for these programs.

I'd add the program in some states that hands out extra food coupons that can only be used at farm stands and farmers' markets for fresh local fruits and vegetables -- helps farmers as well as nutrition.
