  •  I agree with you about the FACT. My point is... (1+ / 0-)

that over the last eight years (or more accurately, since the Republicans got their congressional majority back in the 1994 midterm elections) we've clearly seen that facts, no matter how obvious or how horrible, can be successfully buried or distorted when a corrupt party and a complicit media join forces to help a critical mass of voters willingly suspend their disbelief.

My Dad, for example (an otherwise very smart man who for some reason decided to set his political intelligence aside halfway through the Carter administration and has never looked back), is not at all embarrassed to say that he's voting for McCain because...

(gathering the strength to type this)

...he thinks McCain will expire in office and believes Sarah Palin is the best possible candidate for POTUS because (his words) "She's not tainted yet." Obviously nothing could be further from the truth - yet, none of the readily available facts are sufficient to sway him in the slightest. Indeed, confronting him with facts, however gently, only makes him more entrenched.

In the years that W has been in office, I have watched many very intelligent people (family, friends, co-workers) stop questioning entirely, just so they wouldn't have to admit the FACT that they'd made a terrible mistake voting for him. Those who voted for him twice are often unable to tolerate any discussion at all. The desire not to be proven wrong is very powerful, and I have come to believe that we underestimate it at our peril.
