  •  Don't understand the 40-page length (5+ / 0-)

I have to read a 40-page paper on Individualized Education Plans in order to complete my pre-adoptive training. God knows why; I just do.

I don't understand the length of your document, but every parent -- and especially adoptive and foster parents -- should know the ins and outs of the school's legal obligations, and the parent/child rights that is the crux of the Individualized Education Plan.

99% of the time the school administrators are going to try to hide their legal obligations towards the individualized education of the child because of time/expense, and the parent will need to push for (in writing) the assessments and any resulting special accommodations that may be needed -- up to and including the school's providing for tutors and/or psychological therapy.

A parent who understands the IEP process is the adoptive/foster child's best chance at getting all the help he/she needs for problems that may only emerge gradually -- especially if drugs or alcohol were involved during pregnancy. And it is particularly important for any child who suffered emotional or physical abuse before the age of 12, when the brain's neural pathways are being formed.

So now, not only God knows, but you do too, pastor.

p.s. If there was any emotional/physical abuse of the children before adoption then forget reading the paper and start researching the developmental problems they may be facing over the coming years.

While it hardly comes close to knowing all that we have to know, I'm a licensed psychotherapist.  My specialty has been kids in the foster care system.  So the 40 page document seems a bit of overkill, given the number of these meetings I've had to sit through in my career.

PD, however, is just a whiner.  ;)
