Isn't it true that people who care about politics 'n' such--from whichever side--have a lot in common considering that there are awful numbers who just don't give a thought to the subject at all.

I was in the Dollar General the other day (the closest thing to a "general store" my tiny Tennessee town has, and I needed some warm socks) and a young woman came in, great with child. Some other people at the checkout asked her when she was due and she said "The doctor's going to induce on Nov. 4 if she doesn't come before then." I said in my perkiest tone "Wow, that's terrific, your daughter is gonna be born on a very historic day!"

She looked at me with a completely blank expression and said "There's something happening on Nov. 4?"

I hope I didn't look at horrified as I felt. Just took my socks and said "Well, the election" and wished her luck and left.

Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?

I had a similar conversation with a cow-orker not long after McCain chose Palin as his running mate.  I was talking with someone in the lunch room (aka company pub, complete with kegerator and 52" LCD tv), and mentioned Palin.  Someone standing nearby said "Who's that?".  I tried to keep my jaw off the floor as I explained that John McCain was running for president and had chosen Sarah Palin as his running mate.
