... aren't going to admit they voted for him because Palin is scaring the beejeebers out of them. " You betcha. "

Rural Norcal is not like any place you've ever been.  It's the type of place where folks own a lot of guns for two reasons:

        1.  They're afraid of serial killers and other potential threats such as grizzly bears and mountain lions.
        1.  They are going to be god damned before anyone comes in and takes away their abortions, their gay marriages, their right worship Wiccan goddesses, and their medicinal marijuana.

Of course that's an extreme exageration and the district does have a much more conservative suburban Sacramento portion.  But I think that Palin does not help with rural westerners as previously thought.  I think initially she did because people thought they could relate but once they found out her views, that was it for them.  It's a tough district for any Democrat to win but if there was a Democrat to win there, it'd be Charlie Brown.

... holey guacamole, if I see a grizzly  I'm getting an armored tank !

So we're going for a walk a coupla years ago on the trail that's really close to the Auburn and a guy comes down the path from the opposite way with a GPS unit, he pauses, looks at it, says "bear on the trail 50 yards down the way" and continues."  So now we're like ultra cautious going down the trail but don't see any bears.  Crazy hikers. Coming back later, from another angle we're heading uphill and my spouse looks up and there is this cinnamon colored bear sound asleep up in this tree over the trail right in that area.  We stared at it for awhile and then sort of hustled down the trail a bit faster.

Bears further up into the foothills and mountains are notorious for breaking, entering, and snacking in people's kitchens and making a big mess, but we've had more problems with raccoons. One of them nearly killed one of the dogs, they were coming up onto the back porch and breaking into the bird cages trying to eat the birds, and the dog (40 lb dog, mind you, and part jack russell/chow ) took offense.  They also ate a bunch of my neighbor's fish and turtles. Raccoons are not cute when they are hungry.

Yeah, McClintock bragging he got NRA endorsement and trying to imply that Brown wouldn't want people to be able to defend themselves in this area is laughable.

          •  There is a bear wondering about (3+ / 0-)

near the Stagecoach Trail area. S/he is hitting up the garbage cans along the road there. If you drive up that road it is full of Charlie Brown signs and one lonely McClintock sign.

          •  Charlie Brown understands the neccesity (0+ / 0-)

of gun ownership, especially for rural folks with real predator dangers.  McClintock does not understand that area, he's a joke.

Actually in West LA, we have hungry coyotes that run out of food and come down from the mountains and eat pets.  My dog is an 18 pound Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who could barely defend herself against wild animals.  Though she has been known to go after rats and birds so she might have a Maggie Simpson quality that might protect her.
