my uncle was a fighter pilot.  He is a redneck, voted for bush twice.

he is voting Obama.  he holds magoo in contempt.

    •  Was your uncle able to shed any light on (0+ / 0-)

this incident?  McCain being absent without leave would have been a big deal, even getting permission for R and R in the middle of a crisis would have created resentment.  I would only make sense that he left if he was so disliked that the brass were concerned for his safety.

      •  concerned for his safety (0+ / 0-)

He was concerned for his own safety. The brass didn't know he left, because he didn't ask anyone permission to leave. Anyway, days later after the ship was distroyed and needed to be towed home, Mccain needed to find another ship to get on anyhow.

John McCain spends $150,000 of his campaign's funds on his V.P.'s clothes, and $22,800 for her makeup because he's such a Fiscal conservative

        •  But the question was "Why" was he concerned for (0+ / 0-)

his safety?  Who and what was he afraid of?  Also John McCain consistently does not fight for veterns issues.  He interfered with investigations regarding POW's/MIA in Vietnam.  Why..that is extremely odd behavior...the military people that I know would die for one another even a half century later.  It is just odd.

I'd say it was because of the fires burning and the bombs exploding. He saw people getting burned to death and killed by bombs on the ship everywhere he turned. He wanted to get the hell out of there. It will really open up your eyes reading the article linked to at the end of the diary.

            •  He left the next day..the bombs had (0+ / 0-)

finished exploding.  He had moved off the deck so he was out of danger.  The brass not knowing he left doesn't make sense.  When a plane or helicopter takes off from and airbase or a ship, all personnel have to be accounted for, they would never have gotten clearance to take off without reviewing orders for everyone on board.  If a pilot were to help someone go AWOL by ferrying him off the ship, he would probably been court marshalled.  None of this makes sense.

He left (hitched a ride) on a NY Times reporter's helicopter without telling anyone while the ship was in pandemonium. They were too busy trying to keep the ship from sinking to check and see if anyone was sneaking away inside the reporter's helicopter. The fires spread and continued to explode bombs for days. Are you sure you read the last linked article?
