Everyone living in LA (anywhere) saw what had happened.

That was the point. It hit too close to home regardless of where in LA you actually lived.

    •  with all due respect.......... I am not (0+ / 0-)

sure I get your point.  I live in Louisiana and while I am sympathetic, even outraged over what happened to the people involved in Katrina.  I am not a katrina victim and Louisiana didn't disappear after katrina. I for one resent that all people can ever relate to when it comes to Louisiana is Katrina. It happened. If you look at the map you will perhaps be able to see that New Orleans and it's immediate surrounding towns is not nearly all that is in Louisiana.  Everybody in Louisiana were not direct victims of katrina and our state did not end with katrina.

    •  thats my point of why McCain is still leading (1+ / 0-)

Yes, all Louisianan's saw what happened. But North Louisiana is bible-thumping rednecks who hate New Orleans. To them, there was just some rain and flooding. They pass around the email about how Denver never asked FEMA for help when there was blizzard. They pass around emails about how the city got $500bil and only has 500k residents.

They are not dealing in reality. They are dealing in their sheltered Fox News world where New Orleans is nothing but poor black people who want to take all their money.

They have been raised to be scared of New Orleans. So it didnt hit too close to home for a lot of these people. A lot of people live over 4 hours away and are more likely to consider themselves closer to Dallas (socially as well as geographically) than New Orleans.

Having lived in North La for 4 years, I know not all of them are like this, but it is a very large majority. Katrina did not make them sympathetic to the plight of the poor, and if anything it just makes them more irritated that they havent been able to "just rebuild already."

      •  I live in North Louisiana and have been here all (0+ / 0-)

of my life..over 45 years.  Sounds like you met a few people in the 4 years that you were here.  However, your characterization of North Louisiana is totally incorect.
