I agree 100% with your question - I really want to see HAVA overhauled under the next (hopefully Obama) administration.

    1. Early voting for 2 weeks, with locations throughout the county. However even today, channel 8 was showing wait times at some places of 30-45 minutes to vote. When I voted the first Monday of EV at the Clark County RTC building, there was no line.
    1. Touchscreens WITH paper trails should be required of all electronic voting machines. Otherwise, go back to paper/optical scan.
    1. Do something to fix voter registration. I don't care if its biometric identification. Just do something.

If we're going to have a paper trail, we should just go ahead and have paper ballots. That's why I voted absentee.

I'd add to the reform list one feature from North Carolina: On-the-spot, same-day, promptly-vote registration during the early voting period.

We need to really push for these changes in every state, even the most liberal and progressive. Reforming HAVA might get slowed if there's a logjam in Congress because of the Bush-built backlog of other important legislation.

It's a disgrace that a self-smugly liberal state like New York -- where I live -- does not have ANY meaningful early voting procedure.

If all the blue states would move to an early voting system like North Carolina and Nevada's, the pressure would be on the red states to follow.
