    was about Constitutional Rights, tarriff policy, and regional socio-economic differences...only about slavery in hte sense that the peculiar institution was a flashpoint for the regional differences.  

    Thoughtful Southerners had understood for 50 years before Secession that the institution was a dead end, and could find no way out.  People like Robert E. Lee (who owned no slaves, btw) realized that slavery could not survive, and that the northern industrial economy and midwestern subsistence farming economy were basically at odds with the agrarian luxury crop economy of the South.

    the "core belief" of people like Lee, Judah P Benjamin, et al was that states were independent units which chose to band together into the union.  This is the argument of staes rights, and the real core of the socio-political divide of that era.  

    "That government of, by, and for the people shall not perish from the Earth."
