  •  I hope every person on this site who (4+ / 0-)
leans towards demonizing every Republican sees and remembers this video.  We all frequently refer to them as rethugs or repugs or other denigrating terms and are negative towards them.  But there are some who voice beliefs that anyone who is Republican is inherently evil, that they would turn their backs on their own family members if they were Republican, and that they would never consider being friends with a Republican.

Replaying this video after the election, to remind us all that there are good and honorable people on both sides of the aisle, who are honestly trying to do what they believe best, would be an excellent thing to do.

but it's hard to not look at another aspect of this: like Dick Cheney, this guy saw the light because he had friends and family that are openly gay.

Similar to Limbaugh saying drug addicts should be imprisoned, until it's him, these republicans tend to be lacking in compassion (thus "compassionate conservative," no really, since I say the words it's true) until it's them or their own family.

Yes, this man spoke his heart and I'm glad he was able to see the light, but it would be nice if more republicans could manage to do this without it having to smack them in the face.  Democrats don't tend to have this problem, by and large (and bi and large people don't have this problem), which is why I have a hard time accepting not thinking of them negatively as a group.

      McCain/Palin: Jan. 09-Apr. 09; then what?

When we demonize them, we're not seeing them as individuals, either.  And those of us who know have close family and friends who are Republican know many of them to be kind, caring people.  Those who are fortunate enough to be surrounded by Dems and have no personal contact with them can get to be quite judgemental towards them.

Guess it comes down to the need for broad social interactions between All kinds and groups of people.  The more isolated you are from any particular group, the more likely you'll be to demoninze them.  The more contact you have, the more likely you'll be to see them as individuals who matter.
