But I for sure would not be silent as people at parties insulted me. Frankly, I don't know how progressives live in places like that. I am spoiled here in San Francisco I suppose.

as soon as we can...depending on jobs here for a bit longer and then we're getting the hell out.

I wasn't always silent at gatherings like that, but after a while you figure out that nobody is in the least interested in actually hearing what you have to say, and I've spent too many times actually SURROUNDED, with people in a circle all around me throwing talking points and snide taunts.  You can't rebut that shit.  Nobody will get off the talking-point level and say anything meaningful, and they just keep egging each other on and raising their voices until it gets pretty freaking scary.

Anyway, I'm past the point where I even want to try talking to them.  If I were to open my mouth at a gathering now, I suspect what would come out is:

"Fuck YOU, and YOU and YOU and YOU over there too. Because of your votes, I'll be eating cat food when I'm old.  You know something?  So will you.  But you'll still be too fucking stupid to know you did that to yourself and you will run around blaming gay people or Black and Brown people, and liberal elites, and anyone who doesn't wear a freaking flag pin, and "welfare mothers" (whatever the fuck those are, and I'd like to know do you include Exxon Executives in that bunch?)

and, you..the cross-eyed moron laughing your nuts off over in the corner there...get some fucking teeth, you nitwit.

It's probably a good thing if I don't canvass just now.

I definitely am spoiled here in San Francisco. Honestly, I cannot imagine being in situations like that with my neighbors or co-workers.

Good luck to you in finding a job in a more hospitable place soon!
