I have relatives who've had every opportunity, and didn't do anything with it. Meaning, they had a chance to go to college and were highly intelligent and could've had the same good life I have, but they chose to drop out of high school, get into drugs and theft, etc. These are people who didn't grow up in Sec 8 housing. So imagine what it's like to live there?  Tiny place, your mom & dad (or one or the other) busting their butts every day just to keep food on the table. Now, how do they afford to put gas in the car to even drive to work? And how do they afford day care for their kids?

Sure, some people have the strength, confidence and perseverance to overcome such obstacles. But most people just keep struggling to make ends meet, thinking this the hand they've been dealt. It would be all too tempting to get into more "lucrative enterprises," that might not be legal, just to make a better life for yourself.

That's why Barack is such an inspiration and source of pride for these folks and for all of us. He didn't have much growing up, but he had a loving family and something special inside him that pushed him to keep going, and go further than any of us could ever imagine going ourselves. He didn't have a rich, influential dad pulling all the strings for him (or even a rich wife). As the pamphlet I handed out during canvassing said, "His story is our story." This is why it makes me sick how the Rethugs constantly slander him. And those who believe such lies are cheating themselves. They don't realize the extraordinary man who stands before them.

When I see I am nothing, that is wisdom. When I see I am everything, that is love. My life is a movement between these two. ~nisargadatta maharaj
