Catholic parishes have had to take on the trappings of Evangelical Protestantism to greater and greater degrees.

I'd honestly faint dead away if I heard any prominent member of the Catholic clergy give ten percent of the energy to social justice issues that they give to hate issues designed to win back white suburban Catholics who have flirted with the Born Again movement.

    As I wrote yesterday:

Gay marriage and abortion are not the biggest moral questions of our time.

The biggest moral question today is the same as it has always been:  "How do I live selflessly?"

It's much easier to take a position on issues like gay marriage than to address the fundamental teachings of Christianity and to come to terms with how much each of us fails to in so many ways to follow the teachings of Christ.

How do I find a way for justice and mercy to embrace in my life?

We cannot pretend that sin doesn't exist, or that it's not a cancer on our society.

But at the same time, we must begin with confronting our own sins, taking the proverbial "plank" out of our own eyes before we try to remove the "speck" from our neighbor's eye.

Justice, mercy, tolerance, hope, love, grace, and redemption are all Judeo-Christian values.

Allows much introspection about what you will do to live God's Word while here on earth.  If the priest came out and read a right wing letter from the bishop or evangalized on his own about voting I would walk out as he spoke.  That is the one thing that would make me quit the Church.

Don't walk out if such a letter is read. Instead, firmly and astutely speap up and say "I dissent."

Let them know that you're going to stand your ground. Remember: Their plan is to drive us away and leave them in total control.

but after all the crap the hierarchy has thrown at us, sex scandles, women as second rate members, etc, this would send me out.  I think that the swing towards the US conservatives is waning.  The social justice wing is coming to the forefront because of the change in the economy.  The conservatives rise as life becomes comfortable for more citizens.  When things go bad the conservative just look mean.  Happening now.
