Some of us are both. I'm a practicing Catholic and queer. The hierarchy does not represent all of us by any means. It's not just their Church, and they don't own us.

Many, many, MANY Catholics voted against Prop 8. Just not enough. This is not over.

    •  I have a question (7+ / 0-)

Do you give money to your church?

I'm trying to understand how liberals who belong to the church justify giving $$ to the church when it's used to deny people rights and to run campaigns full of lies and fear-mongering.

I don't want to come across as angry.  I'm honestly wondering.

      •  It's an excellent question (7+ / 0-)

I do not give money to the Church that goes past my parish community, no. My parish serves the homeless, mentally ill, and others who are living on the margins. It's a profoundly welcoming and affirming place. Fortunately, the parish is so poor that money that comes in for those programs goes right back out to those programs. I'm in a position to see the budget, and see how it goes. I also give money to New Ways Minstry, which is a national LGBT Catholic organization.

I also support the Church's campaign to support immigrants, and a couple of other social justice efforts - again, with targeted money that goes nowhere else.

I do not give to any of the "appeals" that could potentially go to support attempts to deprive us of our rights. Nor do I hide or claim to be anyone I'm not there. I've written pretty extensively at Street Prophets about being out and Catholic, and I know that some of what I've written has been shared pretty widely.

It's my Church too, just like this is our country. I'm not walking away from either one. (Although leaving the US has been tempting...)
