    I was going to add - to our ballot conversation below - in many states the required signatures often prevent initiatives (and sometimes that's a good thing). In Illinois we prevented a 2006 ballot initiative attempt to ban gay marriage. We were able to stop it because they didn't have valid signatures (they have to be registered voters in IL and the address they sign on the petition has to match their registration location). They needed something like 180,000 signatures and we were able to invalidate a TON of them by thoroughly checking each one. Equality Illinois was awesomely effective there.
