all religions as mythologies, with a proper place in human society to comfort those who need it or want it, and treat them all as taxable businesses?  Pretty much, that's what they all are to anyone who is not one of their followers, anyway.

Isn't that why we're supposed to have a separation between Church and State?

If we're really going to remove the tremendous grasp "Christianity" has on people's minds in this country, then we have to hold up reality versus belief and how that maps human behavior, and of course why.  That's a course many don't want to chart.  Plus, it's hard work!

Perhaps, just make the State-recognized marriage (as it is now, with all rights/responsibilities intact) be renamed as "Civil Marriage," while the Church-recognized marriage is newly called "Holy Marriage."  Religious folks really, really like being called "holy."  Just make the "Civil Marriage" the only one recognized as carrying the legal contract of current marriage.

Any two adults could be in a civil marriage from the state.  Any two adults that a particular church wanted to bless could have a holy marriage.  And any couple could have both, if they wanted.

Wow, the wedding industry would love that idea, huh?  Cha-ching....

... in the name of strategy and effectiveness.

They would be a high-profile group and to do this will get a lot of press.
