    started the MOMENT Obama pointed out that he was only the president-elect and thus cannot actually change policy until after he's sworn in.

    I wish we could move up the inauguration.  Nothing is going to be getting better, economy-wise, until we have a president people trust.

      who thought he was going to lose the election to Republican candidate Charles Evans Hughes, seriously intended to appoint Hughes Secretary of State, and then to resign along with his vice president, so that Hughes could then become president immediately (at the time, the Secretary of State was next in line after the vice president for succession to the presidency.)

      Today, Obama could be made Speaker of the House temporarily, and Bush and Cheney could immediately resign.  Alternatively, with Pelosi in the Speaker's chair, Bush and Cheney could still resign, and Pelosi become caretaker president.  No doubt she would be delighted to be the first female president, even if only on a caretaker basis.
