Michael Ciresi was his only real competition and he dropped out before it got to Rochester.

When Franken announced his candidacy very early on he had already amassed a sizable war chest of money and that clearly had the effect of keeping other more viable candidates out of the race.

It wasn't that Franken ran a bad campaign; it was all the baggage that he brought with him that made him a sitting duck.  He certainly could have a run a better campaign but even if he had I do not think it would have mattered.  I'm surprised that he didn't lose by 5 points given all the obstacles he had to navigate.

Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum both went on record at the convention in Rochester opposing Franken's bid.  As it turns out their concerns were well founded.
