A claim under UU "doctrine" might even give you a good case to challenge. But you will have to narrow your appeal to religion, because there are a passel of 'em and they - not you - get to decide whether or not they'll sanction your marriage.

My hubby performs marriages, and has done a few gay weddings. But this state doesn't sanction gay marriage, so he doesn't sign a state license. I'm sure that will eventually change everywhere, but until it does the most committed gays we know are going ahead and having the party (to commit in front of family and friends), and building fine lives together (their marriage, which no one can do for them). They usually get a partnership agreement for the legal stuff, it costs them more than a marriage license would. THAT is unfair too.

Maybe people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw bibles.

      Marriage Equality

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) strongly supports full and equal access to civil marriage rights for same-sex couples. We believe this access is a matter of faith; affirming the inherent worth and dignity of every person leads us to advocate equality for all people, including gay, lesbian, bisexual and/or transgender individuals, couples, and families.

Sorry, I have that in print somewhere so no link.

      Here's one with a link:

As Unitarian Universalists (UUs), we believe that our First Principle, respecting "the inherent worth and dignity of every person," applies equally to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. UU congregations and clergy have long recognized and celebrated same-sex marriages within our faith tradition.
