in his statement about 'guns and religion'.

I lived in Montana when Bill Clinton was elected.  The very same 'run' on gun stores and gun shows for 'assult' weapons happened at that time, out of fear.

I knew many people that did this.  A little 'fringe' for my taste, but not a threat to live around.  I have never feared living in an armed society.

I have very mixed feelings about this issue.  On one hand, how could any reasonable person object to 'common sense' restrictions on weapon type? however, facts do not support that these weapons are used most frequently in armed crimes. As such, I believe this type of legislation is more of a 'feel good' issue for the opposite side of the coin to the 'guns and religion' crowd.

Crime control <> gun control.  If we truly want to dramatically reduce crime, we need to go much further and much deeper than some superficial, low impact law.

As it is currently we're just warehousing people who will become violent offenders if they aren't already. Hopefully the Obama administration will push things forward in this regard, instead of pulling more 'tough on crime' bullshit that does nothing productive.

      •  I don't think Dem's need the 'tough talk' stuff (0+ / 0-)

They have a huge mandate for substance and change of direction, and pandering to the center right 'white working class male' solidly republican constituency would be a big mistake.

I don't think it is 'pandering' to anyone to have a balanced approach to the bill of rights.....all of them.

Placing 'common sense' restrictions on weapons type should be viewed through the same lense as placing 'common sense' restrictions on broadcasting, say in reinstating the 'Fairness Doctrine'.
