it's very hard to believe they wouldn't follow that trend. These people voted overwhelmingly for Hamas, an organization whose charter advocates driving Jews into the sea. Nice people.

    •  remember (5+ / 0-)

the land the israelis currently have seized, past the 1967 war, is illegal by most international law standards. so to the palestinians, it would seem like the israelis are trying to drive them away from their land into the sea (or jordan or lebanon).

    •  Hamas (7+ / 0-)

was voted in after the failures of Oslo, when it became clear that Israel would not make concessions on the status of refugees.

The only people being "driven" anywhere are Palestinians, who continue to be evicted from their homes, have their lands settled on illegally, and continue to be occupied by a nuclear power.

Israel is not under existential threat; the Palestinians are.

Hamas is no more extreme than the Israeli state which it opposes which does not recognize the right of Palestinians to self determination. Why would they recognize Israel if Israel does not recognize them?

      •  Israel did recognize the West Bank and Gaza (0+ / 0-)

under Oslo as PLO-controlled. The West Bank and Gaza thanked them for this recognition by bombing nightclubs.

I'm not sure why I'm even responding to a comment that says Hamas is no more extreme than the Israeli state. You are a jackass.

        •  Typical (8+ / 0-)

of someone who cannot discuss the issue rationally.

Israel is a colonial power; it claims it wants peace while simultaneously building new settlements on illegally seized land and cleansing Palestinians from Jerusalem.

Israel does NOT and has NEVER recognized true Palestinian self-determination and statehood. And that is a fact.

You are a douchebag of the highest order.

It's not like the israeli parliament doesn't have it's share of religious parties, with some very creepy and morally repugnangt lunatic fringe idea's.

People voted for hamas because they where the only organisation not infected by corruption, and actually better able to manage the Palestinian chaos.

People tend to forget that Hamas started out as a secular non regiligious entity, altough it was an offspring of the egyptian brotherhood and the ideology of qutb. They have a well functioning network of schools, hospitals, broadcastingstations, that put the efforts of the plo to shame.
