    After decades of taking a too-full backswing and always trying to kill the ball, I finally wised up when I happened to played a few rounds with an old-timer (he was close to 80):

    1. Never more than half a backswing.  

    2. Take the club back slooow.

    Follow those two rules and you can really clobber the ball on the downswing because you're in much greater control.  In the old man's case, that's the only way he could physically swing the club.  But he was always right down the middle with a surprising amount of distance.
