He's been knee-deep in conservation projects for ages, not just in the States, but India and Mexico and probably a ton of other countries I don't know about. I don't know who the other contenders are for Fish and Wildlife - I don't really have any ties to the green community beyond this guy, and we became friends through other academic chanels... But I'm pretty sure he's a superb bio guy and impervious to being bribed by Big Oil... or big anything.

An unbribable professional biologist in charge of Dept. of Interior may go a long way in saving our environmental butts.  My fingers are crossed :o)

is that he's kind of an unorthodox persona. It's kind of funny, actually. We gossipped a fair bit about things when the Democratic primaries were on full heat, and it was still unclear whether Hillary or Barack will be facing down McCain in the end. But after Barack won, he clammed up. Said he's not saying anything else that might in any way impact his chances, and said he's not going to be at any rallies or any public venues.

Now that Barack has won, we both sort of exhaled.

Shows some self-restraint and more than a little integrity (which is so lacking in DOI right now).

And it's not like they can un-elect him now for having odd acquaintances. I mean, if Ayers didn't do it... =X-D
