    •  If Obama stands against the protestors, (0+ / 0-)

he makes himself and his positions look more moderate, which moves the Overton window to the left, and makes Democrats seem a more credible and less dissentious party to middle America.

The protests themselves won't be productive, if they are in the vein (or are at least in the way the media portrays them) of other protests we've seen, with people dressed in all kinds of crazy ways, with violence, with people being provocative just for the sake of being provocative.  Is that really the image you want America to have of the left?

        1. Thats not how the Overton window works. If Obama denounces protesters he appears more moderate only by becoming more moderate. Thats why Reagan and the Bushes NEVER denounced the far right, no matter how crazy.
        1. Different protests have different characters. Some attract more colorful types than others. Our job is not to capitulate to media tactics that feature the strangest looking participants in order to delegitimize them. For example, the far right loves to use footage of Gay Pride parades to whip up anti-queer hysteria. The proper response to this is NOT to urge parade participants to shed their leather gear and feather boas, but rather to use those images to push the envelope of tolerance and fabulousness.
        1. Just to be provocative (but not for provocation's sake), violence is complicated. Americans generally LOVE violence (Hockey, James Bond, etc...) The Teamsters and the Black Panthers both used it to shift the Overton window in THEIR direction. MLK used the violence of the predictable system to the same effect. When he marched children into firehoses and police dogs he was roundly denounced for his irresponsibility, but those images probably did more to turn the tide in favor. of civil rights than any others of the era.
