    Most medical schools actually screen out applicants who want to be a doctor "to help people."  That may sound cold, but their explanation is that doctors who enter the field "to help people" tend to get burned out from their inability to save everyone, and leave the practice of medicine.

    I don't know that I buy that explanation, but it's the explanation commonly given.
