was the wrong candidate.  his primary opponent diane benson would have run a lot stronger against young.  even young himself said so.

    •  Yeah, like she did in 2006. (0+ / 0-)

Oh wait, no she didn't. She lost by 17 points.

      •  about the same margin berkowitz lost by (3+ / 0-)

only he did it with a massive outpouring of support from the state and national democratic party machines, and she did it with nothing.  and he did it after young was under investigation and had spent a million plus on his legal defense, and she did it before all that.

          Um, try 5.

and the polls just before the election had young down by what, 7 or 8?  this thread is supposed to be celebrating begich's victory, right?  so i don't necessarily want to try to hijack/pollute it.  but i still feel burned about the primary contest between benson and berkowitz.
sites like this one pretended from the beginning the race was between berkowitz and young.  as it ended up -- but they both had primary competition.  you couldn't even get anyone here to acknowledge benson's existence, even after she came out of nowhere in '06 and gave young his closest contest in 16 years!  she had two dem. primary opponents at first in '08, but the other guy [former head of alaska democratic party] kind of self-destructed!
she was far and away the stronger candidate, to my way of thinking -- more progressive, more in posession of a natural constituency, and with ability to bring people in who are typically disenfranchised.  she ignited her supporters in '06 around opposition to the iraq occupation.
i wonder if begich feels benson would have been stronger?  they did campaign together around the state some.
it's the same old crappy DLC or DNC debate the dems have been stumbling over for years, i suppose.  but it does get annoying.  berkowitz was collecting money from an act blue page and spending it in the primary running against benson.  i don't think that's fair.  back the candidate in the general as much as possible, but stay the hell out and let the playing field be level in the primary.  what's wrong with that?

was up by 6 or 7 in polls just before the election and lost by 5 as of today.
benson in '06 was predicted to lose by at least 25 points and came within 17 [again, before young was embroiled in scandal, and with zero outside help].
if you still want to believe berkowitz is the stronger candidate, i can't do anything else for you.

    •  Benson had a lot to offer. (1+ / 0-)

I hope she stays involved in what's important to regular people.
