...as an added bonus you won't have to wait in line for an hour for customer or service or hald an hour to pay for something at the register AND you'll be helping keep a local area business from being exterminated by the Home Depot.

I got a key copied at home depot and the guy in charge of duplicating keys used to own his own hardware store before Home Depot arrived.

Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, 84 Lumber, etc, altogether only own about 25% of the Home Improvement market. It's huge, and both Home Depot and Lowe's (I've worked for both) don't figure they can infringe on the rest. They've pretty much given up on it. The small-hardware stores in the markets I worked in thrived, because they occupied niches which a general big-box store could never meet all of. I constantly referred people to the local stores.

at least where I lived, to find a local hardware store.  At the same time, there were not a lot of HD or Lowe's for some reason compared to some of the other box stores.  For example, I would pass 2-3 Best Buys, a couple Targets, a Costco, a Circuit City, and 10 car dealers before I would get to a HD.  Double that for Lowe's.  Here in Minnesota, though, we have a ton of local stores.  I think it's mainly because the cost of doing business is lower, and people appreciate the service.

I usually go to one place in SW Minneapolis, but they didn't have the commercial size downspout I needed.  I don't know why I have large diameter gutters on my little house, but that's what it came with.  I went to HD up the road, figuring they deal with contractors all the time.  I ask the guy in the department and he's like, "You know I tried to get them to stock those, but they haven't listened to me.  You should try a local store."  I finally found it after searching three other local stores.
