...I wouldn't be surprised if the Republicans stole it, even if they couldn't manage to steal the whole election.

Anyone know anything about how the Help America Vote Act affected Missouri, or the type of voting they have there, or anything like that?

    There should be an investigation.

    •  Some observations (6+ / 0-)

In the KC area, voting is with optical scan ballots, some of the most reliable.  The ID law can present troubles.  Obama wisely recruited volunteer lawyers to pollwatch and hopefully resolve issues with poll workers not accepting the forms of ID that work under the law.  Not enough lawyers to blanket the whole state, but we had the KC and St. Louis areas pretty well covered, and some in the Columbia and Springfield areas.

Unfortunately, it's mostly that most of MO is rural and very religious.  Frighteningly so, in my opinion.

As far as losing the KC suburbs, race probably plays a factor, sad to say.  I was poll watching in KC, wearing my Obama shirt (I was an outside observer, answering questions and moving the line along), and there were some angry types who challenged my right to be there, and some furtive types who wouldn't make eye contact.  I assume those were Repub voters.  Sadly, there were more of them than I expected.

Not that I think it swayed the election, but. . .   At the Chiefs game the Sunday before the election, we just oh so coincidentally "honored our veterans for their service," including a videotaped address from John McCain played to those in the stadium.  Why Nov. 2, and not the Sunday before Veterans' Day?  Well, I suppose you can decide.  But the big speech by McCain, "speaking not as a political candidate, but as a Navy officer," hit the wrong note with me.

      •  Also, early voting? (4+ / 0-)

        Not allowed there right?

Our best turnout seems to have been in states where people did not have to stand in line when they needed to get to work.

I agree on the religious people. Some of them are my relatives and they are REALLY REALLY insane. They poured all their energy into the stem cell thing and then the anti-choice thing.

No early voting in Missouri, and absentee voting is only for a very specific set of circumstances.

Sec of State Carnahan is trying to push it through but she's up against a stubborn GOP legislature.

It is a sin to not have early voting. And it needs to be streamlined.

In Wisconsin, we have "early voting" but all it really is is absentee ballots without needing an excuse. The ballots are kept at city hall and then hauled to each voting place to be run through the optical scanners after the polls close on election day. It would be much smarter to just run them through the scanners when people submit their early voting ballot.

And you want early voting, NOW is the time to ask your state legislators to do it.  In most states, the schedule is decided in the time between elections and swearing in, which means now.

If you don't do it now, there's a good chance your legislator won't be able to fit it into his/her schedule for '09.

      •  Are you sure it's the most reliable? (0+ / 0-)

Black Box Voting has done tests on Optical Scan Machines that show that, while they may be reliable at reading the votes, they are very vulnerable to tampering when being tabulated and when being sent to the central tabulator.
