    When the emissions laws were changed so that all passenger cars had to meet the same standards, the diesels were too dirty.  

    Ultra low sulfur diesel fuel allowed for self cleaning diesel particulate filters to be installed.  This helped meet emissions requirements, but the DPF's still require replacement after about 100,000 miles.

    But regular diesels without DPF's are far from clean when compared to a gasoline engine.  

    And "you can hardly even smell it" doesn't mean squat.  Emissions wise, they're still dirtier than the gasoline engines.
