    a diesel's energy efficiency is comparable to that of a gasoline-hybrid without the battery or electric motor. Diesel-hybrids will be quite a bit better.

    While replacement of the passenger fleet (big trucks and ag machinery have been historically diesel) with diesel would definitely reduce oil consumption and carbon emissions, the big prize here would involve a good sustainable biodiesel technology that scales... algae biodiesel would be perfect, but I don't know of anyone who's managed cheap mass production for that yet despite the number of VC-funded startups in the field.
