There's even better/clearer (IMO) info on the Change.gov site about Obama's positions. It's in the civil rights page and scroll down to the "Support for the LGBT Community" section.

    The information posted includes:

Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: Barack Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.

    And other stuff.

I like that the page also looks at other issues affecting us, which the Marriage Equality movement tends not to focus on.

I'm not entirely sure what that statement means in practice, of course.

If what it really means is that we have to get civil unions passed first in every state and the feds will then recognize it, that would be kind of a problem in some states and create inequality by state. I like your idea, though I don't nkow enough about the specific implications to know if it would work.

Of course, maybe the bigger issue is that the LGBT rights community would be divided about this, with some people opposing anything other than marriage.

that if states recognize civil unions the federal government will.

Additionally, even if the new administration "supports" equal rights for same-sex couples, what are they willing to do?

      "support" is meaningless without actions.....

        it does not follow

that if states recognize civil unions the federal government will.

Oh, I agree. What I meant was that even on its face the Obama statement could mean at least two different things, or at least that's how I read it.

It could mean: try to get something passed at the federal level that would guarantee these rights to same-gender couples, coming down from the federal level regardless of what the states do.

Or it could mean: try to get something passed that would give benefits at the federal level in any states that have civil unions or the equivalent for same-gender couples. So in other words, addressing that lack of guarantee you are highlighting (but not doing anything else on the federal level).

        "support" is meaningless without actions.....

Totally agree. That word stuck out for me too.

There's some sort of strategy necessary to translate a politician's rhetorical stance into action if that politician doesn't decide to do it himself. An organized movement with political savvy might be of great use in such a strategy. I don't know if that exists when it comes to these specific issues. The focus on couplehood and rights seems to be so much on marriage.
