    is that they weren't motivating factors, contra the commenter's suggestion.  I'd have gotten married regardless.

      ...are probably far more aware of the material benefits.  Many of us have been more than willing to make lives together without the benefit of marriage.  A new study out of MA has shown that the primary motivating factor for getting marriage wasn't that people love each other--they've lived together for decades without the benefits of marriage--but that there are specific material benefits available only through the legal structures of marriage.  The simple fact is that marriage and spousal relationships are materially privileged (I've got issues with that privileging, but let's drop the lie that preparing powers-of-attorney or wills or something like that will provide the same kinds of protection. It's a lie.
