I was in elementary school when he was elected, and his establishment of the Peace Corps was thrilling to kids my age. JFK seemed to be the embodiment of helping others, and the Peace Corps was just one of many ways this was reflected in his presidency.

Ironically, on the day of his assassination my junior high school had a school assembly featuring a Peace Corps volunteer who talked about his experiences and showed us slides of Africa where he was serving, and  he urged us to get invloved when we grew older.

Right at the end of the assembly, the school principal came out and announced that JFK had been shot. The whole auditorium gasped.

I turned to my 7th grade friend and said, "Oh no. If he dies that means Lyndon Johnson will be president."

Little did I know how bad that would turn out to be.
