  •  Words matter. (11+ / 0-)

OT a bit, but I don't even like the use of the term "tolerance," because it can have negative connotations. People don't use the words tolerance or tolerate when talking about positive things. I may tolerate lima beans, but I don't particularly like them.

When I drafted my son's elementary school's anti-bullying policy, working off a prior draft, I was able to convince the board to abandon the use of the words "tolerance" and "tolerate" and use instead, in different contexts, the words "embrace," "respect" and "celebrate."

When people say they'll "tolerate" me. I'm glad you convinced the board to drop that word. I get incredibly angry when it's used.

During the VP debates, for example, when Sarah Palin said she "tolerates" gays, I had a fit. What a smack in the face.

There's this favored saying among some Religious Right groups that the concept of tolerance has to include tolerating the intolerant. Otherwise the tolerant are intolerant rather than tolerant.

So they'll say that progressives who claim to be tolerant but won't let little Bobby be called gay by his classmates really aren't tolerant.

Or that someone who doesn't want the Ten Commandments displayed in public parks or government structures isn't being tolerant.

        That sort of thing.

The word is so removed from its actual original meaning among some that it's impossible most of the time to be sure just which general class of definition someone is using, much less the specific definition.

Incomplete list of McNames in profile. Personal favorites include McSogynist, McNopoly, and McThuselah, and McCambrian.

        Spare me the tolerance.

Do me the honor of not tolerating me.  Accept me, and value me as a full member of your community with equal rights and an opinion that might occasionally matter, and I will trust you in return to work with me for a better world for our children, and to preserve what rights and voice I do have.  Just do not relegate me to the margins of American life by tolerating me.

God and ego are not equivalent expressions of reality.
