  •  The flip side (10+ / 0-)

The flip side of this is that a poorly designed health plan will also hurt Democrats for a very long time.  By "poorly designed", I mean a plan that serves solely to enrich insurance company coffers and does little to provide affordable and good health care to the average American.  The battle cry of conservatives for the next 30 years will be, "we used to have good health care, until the government took it over".  If history is any guide, they will say it often enough and loud enough that people will actually believe it, especially after some Democrats start saying it too.

I would define as "poorly designed" any plan that essentially requires you to buy an insurance policy from an insurance company, without adequate government alternatives and regulations to ensure affordable access.

That's why the mediscam prescription drug plan is such a fraud.  GOPs like GWB HHS secretary Mike Leavitt negotiated against taxpayers instead of for them.

If the plan is to first provide universal health care, and THEN we'll worry about the insurance industry's profits, then health care reform will work splendidly.

If the plan is to first protect the insurance industry, and THEN we'll figure out how we can extend health care to all, then it's doomed to failure.

Which is why my heart sinks just a couple more inches with every succeeding DLCesque figure in Obama's team of advisers...
