  •  In theory, I agree and this makes sense (0+ / 0-)

In practice, though, running the country is not comparable to running the HLR. Not even close. HLR put out articles and engaged in intellectual debates. That's it. Running the country involves actually making things happen, on a vast and complex scale. And the idea of putting a bunch of people of very different views and approaches together, while it sounds intriguing in theory, is incredibly hard to make happen in practice. He will have to actively manage such a team to make sure that they actually accomplish good things. I believe that if anyone can do that, he can. But that doesn't mean that he WILL do it. He's going out on a limb here by adopting this approach. And I'm inclined to agree with it. But it remains to be seen whether what sounds theoretically good will work out in practice. And if it doesn't, he's going to have to junk this whole "Team of Rivals" approach and go with a more ideologically narrow team of administrators and get them to be more focused. Lots of potential pitfalls in his approach.

Sometimes what sounds good in theory and works well on a small scale is what works well in practice on a mass scale. But not always. We'll soon find out if it does here.
