  •  We could use a little calming presence (18+ / 0-)

Nate says the country made up its mind on Obama after the 2nd debate. This is the one where most people wrote that he was a calming presence in contrast to the desperate-seeming McCain.

I'll be glad to have a president who doesn't stroll through the Rose Garden hand-in-hand with a Saudi prince every Tuesday.

Obama is so clearly superior in intelligence, calm, and discipline--and because after watching US presidents over the last 28 years digging an ever deeper hole for us, we have good reason to expect Obama will at least discontinue digging. (I don't expect any president is going to manage to extricate us from that hole altogether in just 8 years).

I'm disappointed that Obama tapped Clinton over an experienced career diplomat to head State, and I'm disappointed he's keeping Gates. But I'm hoping he did this calculating that he could use them as cover for and implementation of a policy shift more radical than Clinton and Gates would themselves propose.

We tend to forget Gates was imposed on the Bush Administration by the Baker Group, to change course from the disastrous one plotted by Rumsfeld. An important indication of Gates' pragmatism is that he's prepared the Bush administration has now had to accept a SOFA committing the US to leaving Iraq. So it may make tactical sense to keep Gates on for a year or two to carry out (and share responsibility for) the evacuation of US forces from Iraq.
